Voronin - Smirnov talks cancelled due to disagreement on venue

A new meeting between Moldovan president Voronin and Transdniester’s separatist leader Smirnov was cancelled at the last moment on September 25, the two sides failing to agree on a venue. Moldovan officials proposed Dubasari or Anenii Noi as venues, while the separatists, invoking security concerns, wanted the talks to take place in Tighina, a town under their jurisdiction on the border with Moldova proper. Tighina is also the place where Moldovan President Voronin and Smirnov had held their first round of talks in seven years last April.

Moldovan Reintegration Minister Vasile Sova said the separatists in Tiraspol had been adamant with regard to holding the talks in Tighina in order to wreck the talks.
