Chairman of Duma's Committee for CIS Affairs commends Moldova's neutrality

On May 29, Aleksei Ostrovsky, chairman of the Russian State Duma's Committee for CIS Affairs, praised during a visit to Chisinau Moldova's commitment to "neutrality" and desire for better relations with Moscow. "I think neutrality benefits Moldova and the Moldovan people," Ostrovsky said.

In Tirasopol, which he visited a day later, Ostrovsky informed Transdniester's secessionist leader Igor Smirnov, that Russia was not prepared to recognize the province's self-declared independence.

On the other hand Ostrovsky said that Chisinau took again into account a federative solution to the conflict and stressed that Moscow wanted Moldova to withdraw from GUAM, a regional organization made up of Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova.
