Chamber of Deputies passes amendment to Referendum Law

With 154 votes in favour, 54 against and 18 abstentions, Romanian deputies passed on February 6 an opposition-proposed amendment to the Referendum Law allowing the dismissal of the President if half plus one of the votes cast (not half plus one of the registered voters) favour the measure and if the head of state had been elected in a second round of voting.

The opposition deputies (Social Democrats, Greater Romania Party members and Conservative Party deputies) were joined by representatives of the governing National Liberal Party. The Democratic Party, which supports the President but shares power with the PNL, voted against the amendment, while the third member of the governing coalition, the Hungarian Democrats, abstained.
