Moldova's Foreign Affairs Ministry released a statement on November 12 criticizing South Ossetia's independence referendum. "We declare that this unilateral and counterproductive measure by the South Ossetian regime will only raise a new wave of political tensions," the Foreign Affairs Ministry statement said. "The pseudo-referendum, held in the Republic of Moldova's Transdniester region on September 17, 2006, and South Ossetia's current illegitimate referendum represent a concerted attempt to undermine the world community's efforts to settle conflicts in the post-Soviet space."
The separatist regime in Tiraspol annouced that in the referendum held on September 17, referendum that was not recognized by the international community, voters overwhelmingly opted for independence.
