Moldova opened an oil terminal on the Danube River on October 26. The Free Port Giurgiulesti, Molodva’s only international shipping facility will be operational "in coming months". Construction on the project began in 1996, but work on the terminal was halted in 1999 due to lack of funding. The Azerbaijani energy company Azpetrol joined the project in 2005 and contributed $27 million of the total cost. "The Free Port Giurgiulesti will enable our country to receive oil shipments from abroad," Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin said at a ceremony marking the port's opening.
