The United States announced on September 18 that it would not recognize the results of the referendum in Moldova's breakaway Transdniester region. "As the international community has made clear, Transdniester is a part of Moldova, and efforts by the Tiraspol regime should not be recognized as anything other than an attempt to destabilize Moldova," U.S. State Department spokesman Tom Casey said. The European Union and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) have also said they will not recognize the referendum.
