Bucharest dismisses Washington Post report on secret CIA detention centres

The daily Washington Post published a report on 2 November stating that the CIA had secret detention centres for leading Al Qaeda terrorists in Thailand, Afghanistan and several east-European countries which were not named for security reasons. The US based Human Rights Watch took up the story and declared that such prisons may exist in Romania and Poland. The same human rights organization said that one of the locations used by the CIA for such purposes might be the military airport Mihail Kogalniceanu. The airport which had been used by the US army during the conflict in Iraq, is now on the list of Romanian bases that are elligible to host US bases as part of the ongoing overhaul of the US global military presence. Foreign Minister Mihai Razvan Ungureanu dismissed as false the suppositions regarding the detention centres.
