PPCD appeals against parliament's decision to hold elections on 6 March: to no avail

On 6 January Chisinau's Constitutional Court rejected an appeal by the opposition Popular Christian Democratic Party(PPCD) against parliament's decision to hold elections on 6 March. The PPCD said that though approved on 24 December the decision was published in the official gazette only on 28 December, a day after the Communists registered their electoral lists. The court refused to consider the appeal on procedural grounds, ruling that it had been improperly formulated.

Nine Moldovan NGOs published a statement calling on the parliament to reexamine the decision regarding election date. The group also said President Vladimir Voronin should resign ahead of the parliamentary elections to allow the next legislature to elect a president who is above partisan politics.
