4 Romanian nongovernmental organizations asked EU Enlargement Commissioner Guenther Verheugen to clarify a declaration attributed to him by the Romanian media. Think Tank Romania, Romanian Academic Society, Pro Democracy and APADOR-Ch expressed their concern regarding Verheugen's supposed allegation that negociations with Romania on the last three chapters of the acquis may be brought to a successful conclusion on 24 November 2004, only four days before the general and presidential elections. "Such a declaration runs counter to European Commission's obligation not to take sides in the upcoming elections in Romania" - concluded their lament the four NGOs.
