Volcanic Eruption Throws Ash Over Japanese City
The Sakurajima volcano in southwestern Japan erupted on August 18, sending a plume five kilometers into the air and coating the nearby city of Kagoshima with a layer of ash. Residents wore masks and raincoats to protect themselves from the ash as the city mobilized garbage trucks to start the clean-up effort. (AP video)
