During a visit to Tbilisi on August 21, Romanian President Basescu said that in order to solve the present crisis Georgia should find a way to start direct negotiations with Russia.
Bassescu also said that Romania supports Georgia’s territorial integrity and that no event whatsoever justifies the multiplication of what had happened in Kosovo.
Romanian president stated that Bucharest would further support the idea of granting Georgia and Ukraine the NATO Membership Action Plan. Basescu concluded by announcing that Romania will give Georgia humanitarian assistence.
On August 2, president Basescu met in Chisinau his Moldovan counterpart Vladimir Voronin. Both stressed the need of changing the peace-keeping mechanisms in force now in zones with frozen conflicts.
