Moldova ranks lowest in a US State Department report on human trafficking

A U.S. State Department report on trafficking in persons released on June 4 said that Moldova failed to make significant efforts to eliminate human trafficking last year. The report placed Moldova on its lowest ranking along such countries as Algeria, Cuba, Iran, Kuwait, Myanmar, North Korea, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Syria.

The consequence of such a ranking is the possible withholding of American non-humanitarian aid.

Moldovan deputy premier Victor Stepaniuc rejected the conclusions of the report and announced a detailed account of Moldovan efforts to combat human trafficking.
