Voronin and Smirnov talk in Tighina - Their agenda: trust building measures

Moldovan President Voronin met the leader of the breakaway republic of Trans-Dniester on Friday. The first in seven years, the talks took place in the town of Tighina, in an area controlled by the pro-Russian separatists. During the meeting, Vladimir Voronin and Igor Smirnov said they wanted to improve levels of trust between the two sides.

According to presidential aid Mark Tkaciuc, Voronin is optimistic about resuming negotiations for a settlement in which Russia, Ukraine and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe are mediators, and the U.S and the European Union are observers.
