Moldova's prime minister Vasile Tarlev steps down

Vasile Tarlev, Moldova's prime minister since 2001, submitted his resignation on March 19 at a cabinet session attended by President Vladimir Voronin. Tarlev said it was high time to give "new people a chance to work for the good of the country". In the event that parliament approves the resignation, the entire cabinet must also resign.

Serafim Urecheanu, who heads the Our Moldova Alliance, the country's largest opposition party, hailed Tarlev's move, noting that his cabinet "has brought Moldova to the verge of economic collapse."
