Romanians vote in a referendum on changing the electoral system

For the first time since Romania joined the European Union on January 1, the Romanian electorate on November 25 was called to vote in elections to the European Parliament. About 18 million Romanians were eligible to choose their 35 deputies in the Strasbourg parliament. The elections, originally scheduled for earlier this year, were delayed by political infighting.

At the same time, Romanians were called to vote in a referendum on President Băsescu's wish to change the electoral system. Traian Basescu wants to introduce elections in single-member constituencies on the basis of a majority two-ballot system.
