Romanian Government passes bill which amends the electoral system

The Romanian government on October 29 assumed responsibility in Parliament for a bill proposing a mixed electoral system, consisting of elements of both plurality and proportionality. The bill included 23 of the 113 amendments submitted by the parliamentary groups.

President Traian Basescu said he would not ratify the new law before the referendum on his own version of a new electoral system, referendum due to take place in late November, on the same day with the elections to the European Parliament. Traian Basescu wants to introduce elections in single-member constituencies on the basis of a majority two-ballot system.
