According to early exit polls, Romanians voted on April 19 against impeaching the suspended President Traian Basescu who had been accused by Parliament of violating the constitution. Exit polls for TV stations said about 75 percent voted against impeachment. The turnout was estimated at 43% of the electorate.
President Basescu has been locked in a power struggle with his former ally, Prime Minister Popescu Tariceanu. After the referendum, Traian Basescu said the vote represented the will of Romanian people and appealed to Parliament to cooperate in taking into account the result of the plebiscite.
In spite of the result, the debate on the division of powers between parliament and president is likely to continue.
