Bucharest: Parliamentary Commission to weigh impeachement charges against President Basescu


The joint chambers of the Romanian Parliament debated on February 28 an impeachment motion initiated by the opposition Social Democrats who accuse President Traian Basescu of having violated the constitution. With 258 votes in favor, 76 against and 21 abstentions, MPs createda commission to establish if the charges are impeacheable. The commission’s report is expected on March 21, at the latest.

Signed by 182 MPs of the opposition Social Democrats and the Greater Romania Party (PRM), the impeachment motion was submitted to Parliament on February 13.
