The new government of the breakaway region of Transdniester was sworn in on February 12,. The new cabinet is largely the same as the old government, with the key portfolios -- foreign affairs, state security, defense, and the economy -- all in the same hands. The previous government of Transdniester resigned after President Igor Smirnov was elected for a fourth term in elections in December. Smirnov, a Russian native, has been in power since 1990. In January, Transdniester's Supreme Soviet revoked earlier decisions to back the formation of a federation or confederation with Moldova.
