Moldovan Foreign Minister Andrei Stratan announced on September 18 that Chisinau would not recognize the results of an independence referendum in the breakaway Transdniester region. "The referendum was a political farce staged by the authorities in Tiraspol. The Moldovan authorities seek genuine democratization of the Transdniester region and the Foreign Ministry will go ahead with its policy of unifying the country," he added.
