U.S. Ambassador to the OSCE: Referendum can not be seen as a legitimate expression of the will of the people living in Transdniester

Speaking in Vienna at a meeting of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe's Permanent Council, U.S. Ambassador to the OSCE Julie Finley said a planned independence referendum in Moldova's breakaway Transdniester region, could not be seen as a legitimate expression of the will of the province's people and that no country would recognize Transdniester as a state with a lawful government. Finley also called on Russia to demand that Transdniestrian officials cancel the planned referendum and help find a negotiated settlement to the conflict. Also on July 26, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State David Kramer said in a meeting with Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin that the international community will not recognize the referendum's results.
