Separatists in Tiraspol intend to hold a referendum on September 17

Separatist Supreme Soviet in Moldova's region of Transdniester announced on July 12 that it would hold a referendum on September 17. Inhabitants of the breakaway region will face two questions, on whether Transdniester should become independent and then "freely unite with" Russia, or whether it should abandon its drive for independence and rejoin Moldova.

Outgoing OSCE ambassador to Chisinau William Hill dismissed Tiraspol's intention in an interview with RFE. Hill said that a referendum might be organized only after the frozen conflict in Transdniester had been solved. William Hill also decried the suggestive power of the referendum questions proposed by the separatist pro Russia leadership in Tiraspol.
