EU starts monitoring mission of Moldova - Ukraine border


On 30 November the European Union inaugurated its mission to help monitor and police Moldova's border with Ukraine. EU High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana and Benita Ferrero-Waldner, the EU commissioner for external relations, oficially opened the mission in Ukraine's Black Sea port of Odesa.

The mission for which the European Commission has allocated 7 million euros and which is supposed to last two years, will be led by Brigadier General Ferenc Banfi of Hungary and will include border police and customs officials from 16 EU member states. Teams of EU border and customs officials will work along the entire Moldova-Ukraine border, including the Transdniester segment.
