Authorities in Tiraspol, the capital of Moldova's breakaway Transdniester region, opened their own mint on 18 November, announcing that the locally minted money would go into circulation on 21 November. Transdniester began circulating its own banknotes in 2000 but had to mint the coins in Poland. Last year, Moldovan and Ukrainian authorities seized a truck in Lviv, Ukraine, that was carrying coins to Transdniester from Poland. Moldova filed a formal complaint with the European Union over the incident.
