On 2 February Romanian President Traian Basescu briefed his Moldovan counterpart Vladimir Voronin on his visit to London. During a phone call Basescu reported that he had asked British Prime Minister Tony Blair to support the appointment of a permanent European Commission representative to Moldova. Basescu reiterated Romania's willingness to assist Moldovan efforts to meet EU standards.
The two presidents also discussed the possibility of building a transit gas pipeline that would link Drochia, Falesti, and Ungheni in Moldova with the Romanian town of Iasi. They agreed to start discussions at expert level on the possibility of Romanian participation in road-construction projects in Moldova.
