President Basescu said on 12 January that Romania "might stumble in the process of acceding to the European Union" if it failed to fight corruption and to set in place a strictly accurate judicial system. Speaking at a meeting of the Supreme Magistrates Council, Basescu also said that as chairman of the council he would oppose any political interference in the judicial process.
