2 exit polls showed a dead heat in the presidential runoff between Prime Minister Adrian Nastase and Bucharest Mayor Traian Basescu. At the end of the elections both candidates claimed victory.
Nastase said "I will be a strong president." Basescu claimed victory too, referring to the fact that the exit polls had been taken two hours before the ballot closed.
The poll carried out by Insomar/MetroMedia gave each candidate 50 percent. The other carried out by the Center for Urban and Regional Sociology (CURS) gave Nastase 50.7 percent to Basescu's 49.3 percent.
The difference between the the two parties in both polls was less than the margin of error.
