4 Civil society organizations asked President Ion Iliescu on 4 November to adopt an unambiguous tone on the proposal to pardon miners' leader Miron Cozma. The Group for Social Dialogue, the Civic Alliance, the Association of Victims of Miners' Rampages, and the Pro Democracy Association said they considered the proposal "highly dangerous and inopportune." President Iliescu told journalists the same day that he was "thinking the matter over."
Prime Minister Adrian Nastase said the debate on Cozma's possible pardon should not be considered a priority at this moment. National Liberal Party - Democratic Party alliance candidate for the state presidency Traian Basescu said politicians should not question a verdict of the High Court of Justice. Cozma is serving an 18-year prison term.
