Romanian President Ion Iliescu said that Romania's relations with some of its neighbours were "difficult, brittle" in some respects. Speaking at a reunion of Romanian ambassadors, Ion Iliescu called Romania's relations with Moldova special in spite of "an anti-Romanian, irrational campaign harming both countries". Referring to Ukraine, Ion Iliescu said that in spite of existing problems Romania wanted to achieve a positive partnership with Kiev.
