Mircea Geoană and Sergiu Mocanu fail to sign a document on stability and security for Moldova

Romanian Foreign Minister Mircea Geoana announced on Thursday that no agreement had been reached regarding the signing of a document on stability and security for Moldova. Geoana expressed his regret that as a consequence President Vladimir Voronin would not attend the ceremonies hosted by his Romanian counterpart at the Putna Monastery.

Geoana said that he had a last meeting with Moldovan presidential advisor Sergiu Mocanu on Thursday morning and the two sides failed to reach a compromise regarding the text proposed by Moldova, to which Romania had made "some suggestions".

Geoana described the talks as an "useful exercise" in trying to find a political and diplomatic formula for "smoothing over some asperities" that had turned up in bilateral relations. He announced that in the months to come Bucharest and Chisinau would start a more intensive and "very honest" dialogue.
