In the Global Survey of Media Independence in 2003 released by Freedom House Romania has been assigned a category rating of „Partly Free“. Of the 193 countries under survey Romania occupies place 103 which, from a South-East European perspective, is behind Bulgaria, Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro. The Freedom House report draws attention to the growing number of law suits filed by the authorities against independent media and the increasing instances of aggression against journalists.
